Description
Hunting art and garden art enjoyed a high status in the court of the Safavid Empire. This is shown by the Vienna Hunting Carpet, as well as this engraved hemispherical bowl on a low foot. One band is adorned with hunting scenes over vine scrolls, a further provides information about the bowl’s owner—“His servant Muhammad Shafi,” “owner (is) Her Highness, the Begum”—and its genesis: “work of Mirza Muhammad from Runan, end of the month Dhu’ I-Qada, in the year 1052 (of the Hijra = 21 January 1643 AD).” The quoted prayer for the twelve imams of the Shia and the title begum, as well as a comparable piece in Mumbai, suggest that the bowl was manufactured in Persia for the Mughal Court. Several stylistic features are indicative of a fabrication by Persian craftsmen. (Wieninger, Johannes)
