Description
-
France was neither the first nor the last European country to imitate carpets imported from the East, but it was one of the most successful. Leading in the field of European carpet production was the royal French Manufacture royale des meubles de la couronne, des tapis façon de Perse et du Levant
(originally two enterprises), founded around 1626 under King Louis XIII. The name reflected the aim: The Manufacture was to produce carpets like those in the Ottoman and Safavid Empires. Enriched by Indian and European influences, such as embroideries and tapestries, an individual formal language rapidly developed, which was geared to the taste of the French royal court. This table carpet originates from an earlier phase of production; its patterning is strongly reminiscent of that of carpets from the Middle East; the very wide borders and tassels hung on the center field point to its use as an exclusive table decoration. In the 16th/17th centuries, valuable carpets were only rarely laid on the floor.
