Description
"Dyed ground" (jizomari 地染). Sanyō 三曜: this pattern of three small circles, which are arranged like the rectangles of the character 品, is supposed to represent the three stars that line up in the center of the constellation Orion. Sanyō 三曜 is a symbol of the god of war; in the top center there is a “generalissimo star” (taishōgunboshi 大将軍星) flanked by two stars on the left and right, namely by a “general to the left” (sashōgun 左将軍) and a “general to the right” (ushōgun 右将軍). Shōbu 菖蒲 (= calamus) can mean according to the sound “military” or “martial”. Therefore, the armors made of tanned deerskin was often decorated with the shōbu motif. This motif is also used as a fabric pattern called shōbugawa monyō 菖蒲革文様 ("calamus"-leather pattern). The motif shōchikubai 松竹梅 (pine, bamboo, plum) is one of the "auspicious patterns" (kisshō monyō 吉祥文様).
