Description
"Dyed ground" (jizomari 地染). Alternately turned bats and dots. In ancient China, the word "bat" could also mean "to turn into happiness", so this positive connotation was also transferred to the bat in Japan. Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō 市川團十郎 used the auspicious bat motif as one of his trademarks. Stencils for komon 小 紋 ("fine pattern") are mostly made in the drill cutting technic. The pattern of komon is not oriented in a specific direction and is so fine that it appears monochrome from a distance.
