Description
-
The MAK owns a unique collection of Mamluk carpets from the 15th and 16th centuries. This carpet, consisting of five larger and seven smaller fragments, is the oldest in the entire inventory. Its dating to the late 15th century can be explained, among other things, by the use of five colors, as well as the absence of umbrella and lancet leaves regarded as typically late-Mamluk. Despite considerable gaps in the lower third, the overall design can be reconstructed: The carpet belongs to the group of Mamluk carpets with three octagons that define the field. It remains unclear why the carpet was cut up in this manner, but that the remnants were preserved.
