Description
-
Anatolia, with Ushak as the textile center, was one of the most productive carpet regions. There is evidence that exemplars of various qualities and sizes were knotted there in the late 15th century. Many of them were exported to Europe, where they have been preserved to the present day in numerous historical collections. Their depiction in contemporary Italian paintings from the second decade of the 16th century facilitates their dating. The pattern of the carpet field, an endless rapport, consists of two rows of geometric, yellow tendrils and is structurally reminiscent of patterns of silk fabric.
