Description
-
Vine-scroll carpets of this type were very successfully produced and exported from the late 16th century, as depictions on contemporary European paintings and many exemplars that have been preserved in Western collections prove. The density of their knotting is less than that of the proceeding example; the fact that their design no longer features animals is a characteristic of the later Safavid carpets. The exemplar is among the finest and earliest of this type; the warp and weft are still kept in silk and wool and not—as later—
in cotton. Two delicate tendril systems lying on top of each other, one white and one green, sustain the expressive fantasy blossoms of the middle field. Cartouches of various colors and shapes clearly subdivide the border.
