Description
-
According to the inscription on its lid, this chest designed by Hermann Herdtle was made for the Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry, today’s MAK. The central front panel is decorated by a carved state coat of arms upon the imperial double-eagle; the two other panels contain allegories of art and industry painted in oil by Rudolf Rössler (1864–1954), who—like Herdtle—was a professor at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. The models for this magnificent piece of Historicist furniture were hope or dowry chests from the Renaissance; these are echoed in this piece’s lavish Renaissance-style carvings, while the front panels are framed by Moorish ornaments.
