Description

"Dyed ground" (jizomari 地染).
Carp (koi 鯉) adapt effortlessly to their environment so that they can survive even in polluted water and live up to 70 years. Japanese carp motifs such as koi no takinobori 鯉の滝登り (carp swimming up a waterfall) and tōryūmon 登竜門 (ascent to the dragon gate) symbolize the mastery of a seemingly insurmountable hurdle. They refer to a Chinese legend according to which a carp that swims up the rapids of the Yellow River Huang-Ho is transformed into a dragon. The carp therefore stands for vitality, a steep career climb and professional and family security.
