Description
Right from its establishment in May of 1903, the Wiener Werkstätte also produced jewelry, with brooches, pendants, rings, and belt buckles being the dominant types. All of these were produced either as one-of-a-kind pieces or in small series of between two and six. Elaborate necklaces, such as this collier after a design by Carl Otto Czeschka, were produced far less often. Like their designs for other products, jewelry designs from the Wiener Werkstätte stand out by virtue of their independent, unmistakable formal language. Czeschka, who continued providing the Wiener Werkstätte with designs after departing from the organization in 1907, tended towards a light, decorative style. Though he employed predominantly figurative motifs and experimented with stylized leaves, flowers and animals, he retained the oval as a frame, as can be seen clearly here. This collier was purchased from the Wiener Werkstätte in 1912 by the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry. (Schmuttermeier, Elisabeth)
