Die Sammlungsausstellung DINGE. schlicht & einfach beschäftigt sich aus verschiedensten Perspektiven mit dem Prinzip der Einfachheit – nicht nur als Prämisse der Ästhetik, sondern auch im Kontext gesellschaftspolitischer und soziologischer Phänomene. DINGE. schlicht & einfach vereint in einem kuratorischen Experiment drei parallel laufende Themenausstellungen: Kuratiert von drei Sammlungsleitern des MAK spüren die drei Ausstellungsteile der Ästhetik der Einfachheit sowohl in der europäischen als auch in der asiatischen Kunstgeschichte nach. In nahezu periodischen Wellen haben Einfachheit und Reduktion über die Jahrhunderte immer wieder die Form von Gebrauchsgegenständen und kunstgewerblichen Objekten geprägt. Während in der Aufarbeitung des Möbeldesigns Einfachheit vor allem als gestalterisches Problem der Moderne untersucht wird, konzentriert sich der Ausstellungsteil zur Einfachheit von alltäglichen Dingen auf die Gegenpole Schlichtheit im Gebrauch sowie Einfachheit im Luxus. Die Erforschung der asiatischen Kunstgeschichte setzt Einfachheit in Relation zu Lebensart und Weltanschauung, und gleichzeitig zu europäischen Tendenzen. Diese Ausstellung versucht nicht, Antworten zu geben oder die Begriffe schlicht und einfach zu definieren. Vielmehr wollen wir in Streifzügen durch Stilgeschichten und Jahrhunderte den Besucher animieren, seinen eigenen Begriff von Schlichtheit und Einfachheit zu definieren und zu finden – was nicht so einfach ist, handelt es sich doch um ein äußerst komplexes Begriffsfeld. Einfache Möbel Funktionalismus und Purismus, Bescheidenheit und Mäßigung, Ärmlich - keit und Luxus: Der Streifzug durch die einfache Möbelgestaltung vom Biedermeier über Möbel des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts und der Zwischen - kriegszeit bis zu heutigen Positionen stellt im Ausstellungsteil Einfache Möbel die Fülle der Assoziationsfelder des Ideals der Einfachheit zur Schau. Exemplarisch liest sich diese stilistische Vielfalt dabei an einer Auswahl von Tischsituationen – Wohnzimmer- und Küchentischen, aber auch Schreib- und Arbeitstischen samt Stühlen und Hockern – seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert: Damals gewann einfache Zweckmäßigkeit erstmals als eigene ästhetische Qualität an Relevanz bei der Gestaltung von Gebrauchsgegenständen. Schlicht im Gebrauch / Einfach im Luxus Exponate aus Keramik, edlem und unedlem Metall, Glas und Textil skizzieren im Ausstellungsteil Schlicht im Gebrauch / Einfach im Luxus die Entwicklung der Schlichtheit im Gebrauchsgegenstand vom 15. Jahr hundert bis heute. Geräte aus Keller und Küche, die mit klaren Formen und sparsam im Dekor aus der Funktion heraus entwickelt wurden, sind ebenso zu sehen wie luxuriöses, repräsentatives Tafel - gerät, das aus ästhetischen Gründen das Ideal in der Einfachheit fand. Einfachheit: der ostasiatische Weg Die Zuwendung zur Einfachheit lässt sich in den ostasiatischen Ländern erstmals in China ab dem 11. Jahrhundert, parallel zum Übergang vom Militärstaat zur Zivilverwaltung, durch Gelehrte und Beamte festmachen. In Anlehnung an den florierenden Chan-Buddhismus sowie an die eigene antike Denktradition schuf die neue regierende Schicht für sich eine vor allem gesellschaftspolitisch motivierte, kennzeichnende Ästhetik. Reduktion wurde zum Ausdruck einer vorbildhaften Bescheidenheit und fand auch ihren Niederschlag in der Gestaltung von Alltagsgegen ständen. Obwohl sich Japan mit einem bis ins 19. Jahrhundert regierenden Militärstand politisch konträr zu China entwickelte, fand auch dort die „Bescheidenheit“ auf einer entpolitisierten Ebene ihre eigene Aus - prägung. Das nicht wörtlich übersetzbare Begriffspaar „wabi-sabi“ deutet eine raffinierte, jedoch simple Schönheit an.
