Die Ming-Dynastie (1368-1644) ist einerseits für große Bauvorhaben wie die Verbotene Stadt oder die Große Mauer bekannt, andererseits auch für die außerordentliche Qualität ihrer Kunst und ihres Kunsthandwerks. In Europa und selbst in China bestätigen zahlreiche Kopien und Arbeiten im Stil der Ming-Dynastie, wie sehr diese auch in späteren Zeiten geschätzt wurden. Das MAK besitzt eine umfangreiche Sammlung - Malereien, Skulpturen, Plastiken, Lacke, Bronzen und auch frühe Porzellane - aus dieser Epoche; ausgewählte Werke sind in der Ausstellung "Ming. Zwischenspiel" in der MAK-Schausammlung Asien zu sehen. Kurator Johannes Wieninger, MAK-Kustode Asien MAK-Studiensammlung Ausgewählte Objekte der umfangreichen Bestände des MAK sind in der Studiensammlung dauerhaft ausgestellt, die Ordnung nach Materialien entspricht der Spezialisierung der Sammlungsleiter. Im Vordergrund dieser Auswahl stehen große Entwicklungslinien. Darüber hinaus werden in wechselnden Ausstellungen unterschiedliche Aspekte der Sammlung näher beleuchtet und Sammlungsobjekte im Spannungsfeld zwischen angewandter und zeitgenössischer Kunst gezeigt.
