Description: Lahore, one of the Mughal capitals, was a major center of carpet production on the Indian subcontinent. Stylistically, the carpet’s design fits very well into the late Akbar, resp., early Jahangir period. The idealized garden scene with identifiable pairs of birds (peacocks, cranes etc.) and plants is designed naturalistically and delicately so that one can assume its model originated from the court studio. Its alignment suggests that it was used as a wall hanging. In the border, the carpet features grotesque masks typical for Mughal India, as well as a ton sur ton color scheme and the omission of sharp contouring. For a carpet with wool pile, it has a very high knot density, which underscores its extraordinary quality.
