Description
-
At the same time as chinoiserie in Europe in the 18th century, a kind of Euromania under the influence of Western advisers became
prevalent at the court of the Chinese emperor Qianlong. Architecture, painting, and applied arts were designed and influenced by Italian and French artists. This étagère is an interesting example of the combination of Chinese and Western styles. The form is typical of the period, the finely executed enamel plates repeat archaic motifs, the fire-gilt bronze applications imitate French works.
