Description
-
In shape and decoration this large flask harks back to the 15th century, when porcelain was exported in large quantities to Persia and the Ottoman Empire. “Bianhu” can be translated as “flattened gourdflask”, although the form derives from Persian metalwork, already familiar in China since the 3rd century B.C. Moreover, the dense decorative tendrils of peony, lotus, and
chrysanthemum flowers correspond to the taste of Islamic countries. “Bianhu” from the Qianlong period are however larger and bravura pieces from the imperial manufactory in Jingdezhen. After the acquisitions from the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory and from the Japanese Palace Collection in Dresden, this exceptional porcelain flask is a particularly early cornerstone of the MAK Asia Collection.
