Description
-
Following World War I, Austria's newly forming political parties hit upon the poster as an optimal medium via which to disseminate political ideas. Although paper was scarce in 1919, today there exists evidence for 250 poster designs conceived for the election of a constitutive National Assembly. Bernd Steiner's Christian-Social Party poster for the 1920 National Assembly election reflects the anti-Semitic resentments present at the outset of the 1920s. Along with democratic self-determination had come the outbreak of animosities and conflict between all manner of political positions, some of which were quite extreme—and the opportunities opened up by the newfound political freedom in Austria were placed before political morality.
Here, the tormented eagle (personifying Austria) is shown in the stranglehold of the snake, which can be read as a stereotypical pictorial motif representing this period's prejudices toward Jewish members of the populace.
