Description
-
Ottoman art blossomed in the middle of the 16th century. Designed by an unknown illuminator, this dish from Iznik is a showpiece of the era. Echoes of Timurid forms, as well as Chinese flower and bird painting, enhanced by the characteristically
pinnate saz leaves, are found in the depiction. Similar leaves also embellish the Niche or Prayer Carpet (T 8327), whose production is likewise attributed to the Ottoman workshops of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (r. 1520–1566).
