Description
These two figures were originally part of a larger group. The inscriptions signify that they were made in 1641 on commission of the Directorate for Imperial Accouterments. They were very probably intended as costly burial objects; similar figures from this period, although ceramic, are known to have been used for this purpose. The unadorned attire also corresponds to a Daoist ceremonial and has parallels in court paintings of the same period. (Wieninger, Johannes)
