"Dyed ground" (jizomari 地染). Motifs on hand fan sheets: tendrils, genji kō 源氏香 and seigaiha 青海波 (blue ocean waves); tendrils, genji kō 源氏香 and kumi kikkō 組亀甲 ('braided' tortoise shell); tendrils, genji kō 源氏香 and rising steam (tatewaku 立涌) with crosses and dots.
Irakakusa 甍草: nettles.
The maple leaf (kaede 楓, also: momiji 紅葉) is considered a symbol of a long and successful life because it changes color depending on the season. Especially in autumn, the foliage shines in the most beautiful colors. Maple leaves are already sung about in the oldest poetry (Man'yōshū 万葉集, Kokin Wakashū 古今和歌集), and maple leaf motifs on robes are described in the Heian period (Makura-no Sōshi 枕草子, Eiga Monogatari 栄花物語). Even banquets "to admire discolored maple leaves" are said to have been held from the second half of the Heian period onwards.
Genji kō 源氏香: a code of a game in the art of Kōdō 香道 ("Way of Fragrance"), a coding system for characters with five bars.
Seigaiha 青海波 („blue ocean waves): a pattern that can be found in many regions of the world. In Japan it can be found on Haniwa robes from the Kofun period (approx. 300-538). But only since the Kamakura period (1185-1333) has the pattern been associated with water (e.g. Koseto jugs). The name seigaiha 青海波is said to go back to a title of a Gagaku dance.
Tatewaku-/tachiwaki 立涌 pattern: a kind of "courtly" pattern (yūsoku monyō 有職文様).
