Description
The museum’s purchases of contemporary textiles from England began as early as the late 19th century, a period during which England was a leader above all in the development of industrial production methods, with the European continent lagging behind in many respects. As industrialization progressed, the English middle class grew into an important consumer market for which affordable textiles began to be mass-produced. The designs for these became more and more artistically ambitious over the course of time, and the predominant style, subsumed by the term “Arts and Crafts”, embodied a reaction to the aesthetic and economic development of mid-century English output. This decorative fabric by Lindsay Butterfield is typical inasmuch as it exhibits an expressive floral décor in a generously dimensioned repeat pattern—both of which were characteristic of English products during this period. It was purchased directly from Liberty’s in London by the museum in 1900. (Karl, Barbara)
