Description
-
Erika Giovanna Klien began attending the School of Arts and Crafts, where she was taught by personalities including lettering design instructor Rudolf von Larisch, in 1919. In 1923, she and her fellow students – taking their Inspiration from Ludwig Rochowanski and Franz von Cizek – began dealing with the realization of movement and dance in a geometrically abstracted pictorial form that would later become known as Viennese Kineticism. Here, Klien lends additional dynamism to her variously angled lettering by using lines that cross above and beneath one another. The typography and the lines cast shadows, lending this poster an almost three-dimensional character. Despite these qualities, however, this poster for the International Exhibition of Modern Artistic Lettering at the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry was never actually produced.
