Description
Herat, already an important center of court art during the Timurid Dynasty in the 15th century, is repeatedly mentioned as a major site of carpet production. However, it is not yet clear whether the MAK Collection’s six exemplars actually originate from there or from the south of the country. Stylistically, these high-quality pieces are closely oriented to the art of the Timurid period. The well-known, finely designed fragment consists of the lower left corner of a once over seven-meter-long carpet with vine scrolls and fighting animals. Filled with dainty and bold tendrils, the expressive, white-grounded border can be found quite frequently in this carpet group.
