Description
-
Historical Chinese globes are very rare; they only exist in collections in Beijing, London, and Vienna. They are evidence of Western scientific traditions at the court of the Chinese emperor. The globe in the MAK collection shows the continents and countries in enamel on a silver sphere. Noteworthy is the inverted north-south orientation. The Austrian legate Arthur von Rosthorn purchased
this globe from an antique dealer in Beijing in 1902. It is said to have come from an imperial palace.
