Description

The plate’s centre shows the mythological animal Qilin as it flies over the world ocean, a theme certainly not understood in Europe. Chinese porcelain found its way into European royal courts in the sixteenth century by way of Lisbon. It was much in demand, not only because of its exotic character, but porcelain was much favoured as well for the table and in the kitchen. We find Chinese porcelain in the Habsburg kitchen inventories as well as in their other inventories. Only few of these plates from early Habsburg possessions have been preserved.
