Description
This vase was designed by Michael Powolny as an engraving, produced in Steinschönau (today’s Kamenický Šenov, CZE) and sold by Vienna’s J. & L. Lobmeyr. Powolny, well known as a ceramicist, was a professor at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts and, from 1923 onward, head of the Werkstätte für Glasbearbeitung [Glass Workshop], where he could apply the practical knowledge gained through his collaboration with Lobmeyr. During the 1910s, new forms and colors began to appear alongside the decoratively ground transparent glassware modeled after Biedermeier designs. The engravings cut into the glass in strong relief according to Powolny’s designs won praise from contemporary art critics. (Franz, Rainald)
