Description
This precious fragment is a part of a magnificent carpet that exemplifies a characteristic product of Indian court manufactory at the time of Shah Jahan (ruled 1627–1658). It originated approximately a half-century after the Pictorial Carpet with Landscape and Pairs of Birds (Or 292). Following European influences, the plant representations on both carpets are based on accurate studies of nature. Favored by the visual artists of India, these motifs were transferred and adapted to textile art and for metalwork. The floral bases of the likewise exhibited water pipes, which one often sees depicted on Indian miniatures, offer further proof of this; they demonstrate that the fashion for plant illustrations proved popular far beyond the 17th century.
