Iwami 石見 ist eine der acht Provinzen des San'indō 山陰道. Über das Land verteilt findet man zahlreiche Schreine und Tempel aus der Blütezeit von Iwami, als hier im 14. Jhdt. die größten Silberminen Japans entdeckt wurden. Neben dem Silberabbau war auch die Salzgewinnung an der Küste eine bedeutende Einnahmequelle.
