"Dyed ground" (jizomari 地染), "canceling-out stencil" (keshigata 消型). Pattern on bamboo nodes: flowers and rising steam (tatewaku 立涌); flowers, seigaiha 青海波 (blue ocean waves) and ? .
Bamboo (CHIKU/take 竹) is valued for its straight and strong growth. Since its does not wither even in winter, it represents immortality and longevity or strength, but also purity.
Fukura suzume (fluffed sparrow) is an auspicious motif, as the name can also be written with the characters fuku福 (happiness), ra 良 (good) and suzume 雀 (sparrow) or with the characters fuku福 (happiness), rai来 (coming) and suzume 雀 (sparrow). Its 'fluffed and puffed-up' shape gives the impression of a good, carefree life.
The kanoko 鹿の子 pattern similizes the white spots of deer calf (ka 鹿 = deer; ko 子 = kid).
