Description
-
Otto Wagner, the architect of the Austrian Postal Savings Bank building—located not far from the MAK on the other side of the Ringstraße—also designed almost all its interior furnishings: alongside the wall panelings, carpets, and radiators, he was also behind the lamps, clocks, and door fittings, as well as the furniture for the banking hall and the offices. Among the furnishings—which range from desks, benches, and chairs to filing cabinets and étagères—it is this stool that stands out as the simplest object owing to its radically reduced form: five bentwood frames screwed together delineate a simple cube, on which a plain board made of perforated plywood serves as the seat. The screw holes on the frames are concealed with aluminum disks that accentuate the
construction of the furniture—a decorative element that simultaneously mirrors the aluminum-covered bolts with which the marble slabs are affixed to the external façade of the building.
