Description
This panel is part of a six-piece hanging that bore the label “School for Arts and Crafts of the Austrian Museum of Vienna” and was shown at the World’s Fair, St. Louis (USA), in 1904. This fair was held to celebrate the 100-year jubilee of France’s sale of the colony of Louisiana to the United States, attracting exhibitors from 62 countries. This wall hanging, positioned high up on the wall, framed the room (designed by Josef Hoffmann) in which the objects from the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts were presented. Participation in international exhibitions was a way to increase the visibility of this school, which went on to become an important provider of impulses for Viennese Jugendstil. The part of this wall hanging on exhibit at the museum is a simple linen weave and shows two rather ephemeral-looking human figures before a geometric background. (Karl, Barbara)
