Description
-
This ornamental box is among the very first objects that the museum purchased from the Wiener Werkstätte. The relevant archival material, however, contains no information on its actual intended use. Its undecorated rear side suggests that it was to be placed in a permanent location, probably in front of a wall or a special piece of furniture. The box's interior contains three tub-like compartments of differing structure, with the two upper compartments capable of being lifted out. The convex silver surfaces on the display side, polished completely smooth, are framed by a lavishly decorated border as well as by enamel panels with figurative depictions reminiscent of works from the Italian Renaissance. Additionally, the individual smooth silver surfaces are also framed by narrow, rhombic ornamental strips comprised of circle segments. Koloman Moser surely took his inspiration for the box's turned-out border from Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
