Description
This textile is a Polish sash from the late 18th century, produced by Leo Madjarski’s (also: Leon Madżarski) workshop in Slutsk. After male nobles in Poland-Lithuania had worn sashes from what is now Iran, particularly from the 17th century onwards, local variants were woven there after 1722, often by Armenian immigrants. The Radizwill workshop in Slutsk was particularly renowned, where Leon Madżarski produced such sashes, each bearing his signature. These sashes, designed in multiple colours and thus wearable on either side, were generally around 35 x 400 cm in size. They usually featured fringes at the narrow ends, which are missing in this instance.
