Description
Architect Otto Wagner is viewed as one of the pioneers of Viennese Modernism. He propagated an up-to-date architectural style that left Historicism behind to unite practical construction with the aesthetic demands of modern design. With his text Modern Architecture, first published in 1895, he also laid the theoretical foundation for the emergence of modern utilitarian objects. Correspondingly, Wagner’s glass-windowed cabinet—created in 1898/99 for the dining room furnishings of his Viennese accommodations on Köstlergasse in the sixth district—is regarded as the first piece of “modern” Viennese furniture. Its structural division, accentuated by the round, mother-of-pearl inlays in the wood, results from the gallery frame construction within which the shelf fronts and side fretwork are inset; in this, construction and décor form a perfect unity. (Hackenschmidt, Sebastian)
