Description
In 1922, Lucie Gomperz began attending the ceramics class of Michael Powolny at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. Encouraged by the professors Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad, she was to establish herself at the Wiener Werkstätte alongside other female ceramicists such as Susi Singer, Vally Wieselthier and Hilda Jesser following her graduation in 1926. Orienting herself toward the founding principles of the Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte, Gomperz—who married that same year and was thereafter known as Rie-Gomperz—proceeded to develop ceramics after Japanese forms as well as ceramics “for the home” designed after ancient models. Her international reputation grew thanks to her participation in exhibitions such as Paris’s Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925 and the Brussels International Exposition of 1935, where her ceramics received widespread recognition and awards. This made it easier for her to leave Austria for London after the Nazis took power in 1938. Today, Lucie Rie-Gomperz is viewed as having been one of the most important woman ceramicists of the 20th century. (Franz, Rainald)
