Description
Alongside international artistic trends, folk art from the Austrian crown lands represented an important source of inspiration for Viennese Jugendstil works, particularly those of the Wiener Werkstätte. Numerous reputable artists and designers owned collections of textile items from the Habsburg crown lands. Crucial factors behind the attention given to folk art were the exhibitions mounted by the Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry around 1900, as well as the publication Volkskunst, Hausfleiß und Hausindustrie [Folk Art, Domestic Work, and Home Industry] (1894) by Alois Riegl, who curated the museum’s Textile Collection at the time. One objective behind such collections was to preserve the various art forms of the multiethnic Habsburg state and allow this rich formal repertoire to be accessed by a broader audience.
