Description
This two-part cabinet was first presented in 1898 at the 1st exhibition of the Vienna Secession, after which it was added to the furnishings that Josef Hoffmann designed that same year for the studio of his friend and colleague Koloman Moser. Made of simple softwood, originally painted green and with Secessionist copper fittings, it is an example of the late 19th-century Viennese “Brettlstil” [Slat Style], which was influenced by the English Arts and Crafts movement. Instead of concealing the tectonics and functioning of this piece of furniture, the decorative shapes of the wooden slats contribute to the viewer’s understanding of the construction and lend clarity to the cabinet’s structure. (Hackenschmidt, Sebastian)
