Beginning in 1917, Franz Singer and Friedl Dicker attended the Viennese art school of Johannes Itten, whom they followed to Weimar in 1919 when he went to join the newly founded Bauhaus. 1923 saw the two found the Werkstatt Bildender Kunst [Fine Art Workshop] in Berlin. Following their return to Vienna in 1925, they opened up the successful
architecture studio Singer–Dicker, becoming one of the few Viennese firms to employ the Bauhaus style in both residences and commercial buildings. In 1927, for the home of Hugo and Alice Moller, they designed this unusual, almost exotic-seeming armchair with a woven seat, the colorful design of which is done according to Itten’s color theory.
