Description
In 1931, Adolf Loos worked as a designer for Stefan Rath and the company Lobmeyr and commissioned a glass service for the Internationale Raumausstellung in Cologne in an attempt, in his own words, “to lend a new worldview an appropriate form in drinking glasses.” Loos sought to revive glass cutting, a traditional technique of decorating glass since the Biedermeier period, which in his view was in danger of being lost. The result of these joint efforts was the only glass design by Adolf Loos, a timeless, cylindrical cup with a facet-cut base. The drink service, which is still produced by the Viennese glass manufacturer J. & L. Lobmeyr, was expanded with designs for additional glasses by Stefan Rath that were not part of Adolf Loos’s original plans. (Franz, Rainald)
