Description
Josef Hoffmann was one of the initiators of the reestablishment of the Augarten porcelain factory in Vienna in 1923. He designed this espresso service before 1933. Ever since Hoffmann planned the Austrian pavilion for the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, his designs exhibited an influence from the Art Deco style. In his choice of form and the design of the espresso set, Hoffmann followed French tastes. This service is distinguished by its channeled walls and the swelling outlines of the cups and pots that also give it its name. The espresso service Melone (Form 15) is now a modern classic of 20th-century Austrian ceramics and continues to be produced by Augarten. (Franz, Rainald)
