Description
-
With his 1905 coffee table for Hermann Wittgenstein’s apartment, Josef Hoffmann distanced himself markedly from the conventional table shapes of his day: the arrangement of the item’s substructure is strictly stereometric and is based on the threedimensional representation of a rhomboid. In this structure, the legs serve as vertical corner edges, the connecting “spokes” on the floor as intersecting axes. In contrast, the oval tabletop forms a shallow bowl with a solid edge that is grooved on the inside; a square slab of black marble is inlaid in the center. The black stained oak still reveals traces of white pigment, which would originally have been rubbed into the pores of the wood.
