Description
-
Besides a steel table made by Anton Matthias Domanöck for Queen Marie-Antoinette of France in 1770, this is the only surviving piece of 18th century Viennese metal furniture. Signed by the court goldsmith Wilhelm Gottlieb Martitz (1732–1782) and dated 1769, it is an important stylistic document of the early appearance of classicism in Vienna. As the Bourbon fleur de lys motifs on the foot rail reveal, the table was most probably made for one of the three Hapsburg archduchesses who were married to princes from the House of Bourbon between 1768 and 1770. Maria Karolina married King Ferdinand of Naples in 1768, Maria Amalia the Duke of Parma in 1769 and Maria Antonia the Dauphin, the later King Louis XVI, in 1770.
