Description
The Ehrengabe [Present of Honor] was given by the employees of the Wiener Werkstätte to their artistic director, Josef Hoffmann, on the occasion of his 50th birthday. Dagobert Peche formed a branch, attached to which were three fruits—born of the designer’s imagination—that served as the packaging for three further gifts symbolizing the fine arts: architecture, sculpture and painting. The branch rests on a wooden pedestal covered in cloth beneath a bell jar and is reminiscent of commemorative gifts from the latter half of the 19th century. Hoffmann’s present was exhibited at the Wiener Werkstätte branch in New York, opened in 1922. The head of that location, Joseph Urban, presented it to the Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry as a gift from Josef Hoffmann in 1925. (Schmuttermeier, Elisabeth)
