Description
-
Cronus, the god of time, carries the casing for the celestial globe on his shoulder, which functions as a clock. Friendship in the form of a kneeling girl and Amor as the god of love are trying to stop time with their pleading gestures. A marble pedestal with bronze fittings serves as the base.
Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751–1843) was one of the most eminent bronziers in the French neoclassicism and empire period. His workshop served Europe’s ruling families and nobility. The clock entered the collection of the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry (today’s MAK) from the collection of Count János Pálffy around 1920.
