Description
-
"Dyed ground" (jizomari 地染). Motifs on books: pine tree and triple line grid (misujigōshi 三筋格子) at the bottom and fundō tsunagi 分銅繋ぎ (net pattern in the shape of fundō 分銅 (Jap. weight)) at the top of the image; hares in front of scouring rushes (tokusa 木賊) and fundō tsunagi 分銅繋ぎ at the bottom and interlaced circles (shippō tsunagi 七宝繋ぎ) at the top of the image.
In ancient China, the word "bat" could also mean "to turn into happiness", so this positive connotation was also transferred to the bat in Japan. Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō 市川團十郎 used the auspicious bat motif as one of his trademarks.
