Description
"Dyed ground" (jizomari 地染), "main stencil" (omogata 主型). In combination with OR 3925-1832-1: lattice with ni no ji kuzushi 二の字崩し (alternating pattern of the character ni 二) and with asa no ha 麻の葉 (hemp leaf), seigaiha 青海波 (blue ocean waves), wisteria blossoms and checkerboard pattern (ichimatsu monyō 市松文様). Due to their long lifespan and good reproductive capacity, wisteria (fuji 藤) is considered auspicious and is frequently celebrated in the oldest poetry (Man'yōshū 万葉集). The wisteria was also the family crest of the Fujiwara clan. The checkerboard pattern ichimatsu monyō 市松文様, also ichimatsu kōshi 市松格子, is a ishidatami moyō 石畳模様 (= stone pavement pattern). The pattern is said to have come into fashion as "ichimatsu monyō" because the Kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu I. 初代佐野川市松 (1722-1762) had worn a hakama with a stone pavement pattern during a performance, which caused a sensation. Benkeigōshi 弁慶格子 (benkei grid, grid pattern with broad lines): in a performance of the play Kanjinchō 勧進帳 (written at the beginning of the 19th century) the figure Benkei 弁慶 wore a robe with a grid pattern with wide lines. This is said to have led to the fact that the pattern came into fashion as benkeigōshi 弁慶格子.
