Description

"Dyed ground" (jizomari 地染). Butterfly wings and some manjugiku 万寿菊 with kuginuki 釘抜 (nail puller; rectangle with a hole).
Manjugiku 万寿菊: A motif in the manner of Ogata Kōrin 尾形光琳 (1658 - 1716). Since the shape of the chrysanthemum (kiku 菊) is reminiscent of a filled dumpling (manjū 饅頭), it is called “manjugiku”. However, this motif is written with the characters for “long life (manju 万寿) “.
The butterflies (chō 蝶), which undergo unusual shape change during their lives, are considered a symbol of immortality. Since it is said that butterflies spend their entire lives with the same partner, they also represent marital harmony, so they are often used as motifs on wedding kimonos.
