Description
This plain, wide-bellied jug with a circular wooden handle is held by the MAK in two versions: There is the original by Anthony Kitchen, which was purchased by the Imperial Royal Austrian Trade Museum in 1896 and transferred along with that museum’s holdings to the Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry in 1907. And then there is a copy of this jug, realized by the Fachschule für Graveure und Bronzewarenerzeuger [Trade School for Engravers and Bronzeworkers] in Gablonz (today’s Jablonec nad Nisou, CZE), which was likewise added to the museum’s collection in 1907. By sending items that were deemed to be the best stylistically to various trade schools around the empire, the museum hoped to make a contribution towards forming the taste of those training there. In return, the museum purchased these trade schools’ best student works for its collection in Vienna. This explains why the collection owns pairs of nearly identical items such as these two jugs.
