Description
    "Dyed ground" (jizomari 地染). Pattern of alternating monochrome rectangles and rectangles with tōshi 通し. Tōshi 通し: a pattern of dots in compact vertical and horizontal rows. One of the three principal komon komon 小紋. Tōshi 通し translates as "pulling through", "let through". Stencils for komon 小 紋 ("fine pattern") are mostly made in the drill cutting technic. The pattern of komon is not oriented in a specific direction and is so fine that it appears monochrome from a distance. The checkerboard pattern ichimatsu monyō 市松文様, also ichimatsu kōshi 市松格子, is a ishidatami moyō 石畳模様 (= stone pavement pattern). The pattern is said to have come into fashion as "ichimatsu monyō" because the Kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu I. 初代佐野川市松 (1722-1762) had worn a hakama with a stone pavement pattern during a performance, which caused a sensation.
