Description
"White ground" (jishiro 地白). Matsukawabishi 松皮菱 pattern is a combination of 3 diamonds; matsukawa 松皮 = pine-bark, bishi/hishi 菱 = diamond. The tachibana orange (tachibana 橘) is considered a symbol of long life and prosperity in Japan. It is one of the few auspicious patterns (kisshō monyō 吉祥文 様) that originated in Japan and not in China. The crane (tsuru 鶴) is considered a being that “connects heaven and earth” because its call is high and can be heard far into the sky. Since most cranes remain monogamous for life, they symbolize eternal love and loyalty. The crane motif is auspicious and represents longevity and marital harmony. It is often used for celebratory occasions and is especially common on wedding attire. The pattern of evergreen pine trees that withstand the severe winter cold is auspicious and a symbol of both longevity and sobriety, as well as the prosperity of the descendants.
