"White ground" (jishiro 地白). Grid partly with line pattern.
In a performance of the play Kanjinchō 勧進帳 (written at the beginning of the 19th century) the figure Benkei 弁慶 wore a robe with a grid pattern with wide lines. This is said to have led to the fact that the pattern came into fashion as benkeigōshi 弁慶格子.
